Zambian artist Menace ZM, a leading voice in the country’s new R&B movement, has released his latest single, “IRL,” a track that turns the modern digital experience into a raw, sensual soundscape. The Lusaka-based musician, known for his intimate, voice-note-like storytelling, has crafted a song that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Built around the familiar chimes of a FaceTime call, “IRL” captures the emotional push and pull of a long-distance situationship. Menace ZM wrote the song to convey the feeling of longing and connection that text messages simply can’t capture. He describes the track as “playful, bold, and about wanting someone in ways that text can’t hold.”
Sonically, “IRL” weaves a moody, late-night atmosphere, drawing inspiration from contemporary R&B artists like Kehlani, 6lack, and Jordan Adetunji. The production makes listeners feel like they’re on the other end of the line, caught up in a conversation that blurs the lines between a phone call and true intimacy. The single is a prime example of how Menace ZM is reshaping Zambian R&B, focusing on subtle narratives and modern production to tell stories of today’s relationships.
“IRL” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
