Frank Edwards, the founder of Rocktown Records, has consistently spent years shaping the landscape of Nigerian gospel music with his distinctive, high-pitched vocals and powerful, generation-spanning vision. His highly anticipated return comes with “Obuka,” an Igbo title meaning “He is Great,” which offers listeners a worship experience that manages to feel both deeply intimate and spiritually expansive.
Unlike some of his more high-tempo productions, “Obuka” unfolds as a quiet, meditative conversation with the divine. The song is characterized by gentle instrumentation and warm, enveloping harmonies, creating a serene space for reflection. Edwards sings with palpable tenderness and awe, relying on powerful metaphors to express his devotion.
His lyrics paint vivid pictures of absolute dependence and unfading presence, referring to God as “the stream that brings me joy,” “the source that never runs dry,” and “my anchor.” Edwards masterfully grounds this profound faith in relatable, everyday imagery—the warmth of sunshine, the necessity of breath, and the simplicity of morning light—making the spiritual connection feel immediate and tangible.
“Obuka” carries the pure weight of gratitude, stripped of pretense, delivering a moment of profound spiritual grounding and calm. The single stands as a powerful testament to Frank Edwards’ enduring skill in crafting worship music that uplifts the soul and reminds listeners of the enduring greatness he sings about.
