BarryDHype aka Mr Barry Speaks on Street Roots, Unstoppable Energy & Crafting with Pure Vibes

Born Idowu Tolulope Olabode, BarryDHype (popularly known for his hit record Mr Barry) was already a commanding presence across Nigeria’s nightlife and entertainment scene long before the music industry took notice. Celebrated for his ability to control crowds and set the stage ablaze as a hypeman, that same high-octane energy now powers his fast-ascending career as a recording artist.

Blending his street-rooted background with vibrant stage charisma, Barry delivers a sound designed to be the ultimate energy booster. With his standout release “BTH (Global-Hype)” featuring Ruhdee, he continues to cement his place as a dynamic force bringing authentic nightlife culture into contemporary Afrobeats.

BarryDHype  sits down to talk about his street roots, his creative process, and why his sound is the ultimate energy booster.
Q: Before the music started taking over, what did life look like for you?
BarryDHype: Before everything kicked off officially, I was always that active boy in the nightlife and entertainment space. I was constantly around the energy, the people, and the culture of outside life. So transitioning into making music was just a natural extension of who I’ve always been.
Q: If you had to describe your sound using only Nigerian food or street dishes as a reference, what would it be?
BarryDHype: Party Jollof and fried turkey! It’s rich, flavorful, hits the spot every single time, and you can’t have a real celebration without it. That’s exactly what my music brings to the table.
Q: Your music carries a very intentional drive. Who were you directly speaking to when crafting your latest releases?
Barry: I’m speaking directly to the masses and every single listener out there—just to keep them active!
Q: What core story or emotion does your body of work carry, and what state do you want listeners in when the music ends?
BarryDHype: A happy and cheerful state! I want people full of vibes and high energy. Life comes with enough stress, so when you press play on my records, the goal is total elevation.
Q: You seamlessly blend genres while keeping tracks deeply personal and instantly replayable. How do you hit that balance?
BarryDHype: That comes straight down to the creativity I put in during our studio sessions. I’m very hands-on with my process. I write all of my songs myself, and I constantly replay unreleased tracks to test the feeling, analyze reactions, and tweak until it hits just right.
Q: The music industry comes with immense pressure. Have you ever hit a season where you almost threw in the towel?
BarryDHype: Never! I’ve never gotten to that moment yet in my motion. We’re moving full steam ahead.
Q: What is the single most personal record you’ve made so far?
BarryDHype: “BTH (Global-Hype)” featuring Ruhdee. It captures everything about my identity and where I’m coming from.

Q: Outside of making music, what is one thing about you that would completely surprise your fanbase?
BarryDHype: A lot of people don’t know this, but I’m actually really good at playing a few musical instruments!
Q: If you had to pick just one line from your songs to summarize your journey so far, what line is it?
BarryDHype: “Barry wey dey hype pa from the westside shomo! Shey you know I got the vibe shongbo!” That line says it all. It’s raw Westside energy, pure confidence, and a reminder that the vibe is 100% authentic.
