Amerado Explores the Cost of Greatness on “The Price of Becoming” EP

2 min read

Amerado (born Derrick Sarfo Kantanka), is a Ghanaian rapper and singer from Kumasi known for sharp lyricism and versatility across hip-life, highlife, and hip-hop. He broke into mainstream fame as the mastermind behind Yeete Nsem, Ghana’s first weekly newscasting rap series.
His new EP, ‘The Price of Becoming,’ is an eight-track journey through ambition, sacrifice, resilience, and self-discovery. Featuring the previously released single “Obiaa Nte Mase,” the project moves between Afrobeats, highlife, hip-hop, and reggae, offering a raw reflection on what it costs to pursue greatness.

The self-titled opener, “The Price of Becoming (Mpaebor),” sets the tone as a mission statement. Amerado traces his come-up with unflinching honesty, mapping the dreams and sacrifices that forged his resolve. “Sika Mframa” drifts into highlife territory, his delivery gliding over warm, organic production, while “Chacha” keeps the momentum flowing ahead of “Obiaa
Nte Mase.”

On “Fountain,” featuring Skales, the energy shifts to Afropop territory. The record centres on protecting one’s energy, rising above opposition, and enjoying the rewards of perseverance without becoming distracted by what others are doing. “Return of the Lunatic 2” brings explosive, ferocious hip-hop, a reminder of Amerado’s technical aggression. He balances that intensity on “Keteke,” an Afropop groove built for the dance floor that carries a message revealing itself after the party ends.

“Pharaoh” closes the project with reggae-infused production, sealing the EP’s central theme: every dream exacts its own price. Across ‘The Price of Becoming,’ Amerado moves confidently through Afrobeats, Highlife, Hip-Hop, Reggae, and Afropop, but the genre changes never obscure the project’s central message: growth requires adaptation, ambition demands sacrifice, and becoming who you want to be comes at a cost.

Amerado does not present a simple formula for achieving greatness. Instead, he invites listeners into his world to witness how he navigates the cost of becoming, adapting, evolving, and growing through every sacrifice.
