Nigerian artists 99VIBEZ, Morrelo, and JaQi have teamed up to release “Wayward,” a bold, bass-driven anthem that serves as a rallying cry for those who live life on their own terms. The raw, rebellious, and rhythmic track celebrates the unconventional paths of those who hustle without compromise.
The song makes its intentions clear from the first bar: “For my cupboard, I no get skeleton,” which establishes the artists’ clean conscience despite their unconventional ways. The track’s strength lies in its vivid imagery, from JaQi’s lyric “I bring in ecstasy”—a nod to both the vibe and the economic hustle—to Morrelo’s “Mainland to Jakande” flex, which traces his journey to success across Lagos neighborhoods.
The repeated hook, “Wayward child… no come advice how I dey chop my money,” acts as both a celebration and a warning. It’s a bold statement from artists who are playing by their own rules and are unapologetic about their success. As 99Vibez explains, “This is for everyone who’s been counted out but came out on top.” What makes the track exceptional is its balance of braggadocio and street wisdom, with lines like “music industry na UFC” acknowledging the fierce fight behind the glamour.
