Nigerian music producer Rhaffy and acclaimed singer-songwriter Dwin, The Stoic have officially released their joint album, “R&D.” The ten-track body of work represents their first full-length collaborative album, following their 2023 joint project “Love Lanes.”
The partnership began eight years ago during a recording session in Victoria Island, Lagos, after being introduced by a mutual friend. Over time, that initial studio session evolved into a close friendship and a balanced creative bond. Listeners often view Rhaffy as the sonic foundation to Dwin, The Stoic’s reflective storytelling. Rhaffy’s production builds spacious backdrops that capture the thrill and unpredictability of romance, while Dwin’s husky vocal delivery brings tenderness and vulnerability to every verse.
Rhaffy, born Nwanyanwu Raphael Chinedu, is a producer, songwriter, and recording artist known for blending Afropop, electronic dance music, soul, and hip-hop. His solo releases, including “Serenade” and his joint tape “ODA CITY Vol. 1” with Tentik, highlight his capability as both a producer and performer. His genre-fluid approach gives “R&D” its varied musical textures.
Dwin, The Stoic, born Edwin Madu, has built a reputation on narrative songwriting and evocative ballads. His interest in storytelling began in childhood through literature, leading to his first song compositions in 2007. On “R&D,” his lyrics explore romantic attraction, long-term commitment, desire, and the emotional impact of past relationships.
The album opens with “Music,” which incorporates a traditional Yoruba chant, “keere keere o,” setting a celebratory atmosphere. Track highlights include “Heavenly,” which captures the feeling of instant attraction, “1 4 U,” a song centered on mutual support, and “Render,” where love serves as a stabilizing force. Songs like “Side” and “Just Dance” focus on physical chemistry and movement, leading into “Hear Me,” a track about unexpressed emotions.
The second half of the record shifts toward shared memories and reflection. “Cotonou” paints vivid pictures of shared sunlight and quiet moments, while “Company” explores the feeling of unexpected familiarity. The project concludes with “Abike,” an open invitation for open communication within a relationship.
